Science- What do you know about food chains?

Today in science we've been thinking about what animals eat and how food chains work.
Do you know what omnivores, herbivores and carnivores eat?

We listened to and started to learn this song to help us remember;
Then we sorted different herbivores, omnivores and carnivores into our venn diagrams.

Can you create your own venn diagrams at home?
Maybe you could draw around two plates so that you make perfect circles.
Then we had a think about food chains.
We learnt more about them on the BBC Bitesize website; Click Here
Can you create your own food chain of three different animals at home?
We would love to pictures of your science work. If you e-mail them to; debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

Science- Life Cycle of a Runner Bean

What do you know about the lifecycle of a plant?
Today at achool we're planting runner beans so that we can watch how they germinate and grow.
Here's an information sheet that explains more about the different stages in the life cycle of a runner bean.

Once our beans have germinated and grown into seedlings we're going to plant them in our edible playground where they can grow until the beans are ready to harvest.
Have a go at answering these questions on the bean life cycle at home.

Science - Planting out our sunflowers

Today in school we are going to be planting out our sunflower seedlings into the school garden. We're going to plant them behind the rainbows, where we now line up in the mornings and where the school car park use to be.
How tall do you think they'll grow?
What do we need to do to help them survive outside?
When do you think they'll flower?
Here's a really interesting time lapse video of a seed growing into a sunflower;

I spy...

On my walk yesterday I spotted something through a fence...I wonder what it is?
Some animals have particular features on their body to help them adapt to their habitat. A habitat is the environment an animal lives in. It is the animal's home.

Pick an animal from the picture below. Can you think about where it's habitat is and what it is like there? Write it in the comments below.

Zoo Animal Set - SCHOOL SPECIALTY MARKETPLACE

You could... make a habitat diorama for one of the animals.

Butterfly feeding for Summer

In the Autumn term, we looked at how the seasons change. We found out that during the Winter, it gets dark early and during the Summer, the daylight is longer.

Do you remember making our own bird feeders to help the birds get enough food in the Winter?
Orange Bird Feeder - Easy Homemade Bird Feeders - Natural Beach Living

The Summer season is coming up, which means we will be seeing more butterflies around. Why not try making your own butterfly feeder and record how many different types of butterflies you notice?

Top Tip: If you don't have wood and metal screws, you could use cardboard and paperclips to make hooks instead.

How to do it:

11. Fill the bottle up with water
22.  Add ketchup to the bottle
33.  If the ketchup float, then screw the cap on and squeeze the sides of the bottle hard.

The magic ketchup should sink when you squeeze the bottle and float when you release it.

Can you get the ketchup in the middle of the bottle?

Healthy lifestyle

Did you guess what it was Year 1? It's an orange! Well done if you got it right 👍  Here is the picture, completely zoomed out:

To keep ourselves healthy and strong, we should be making sure that we eat lots of things that are good for our bodies. This means having fruit and vegetables, proteins, dairy and some fats.

Draw an outline of a body. You can copy the picture below. Now, fill the body with food that is good for you. You could draw pictures, or find images from magazines at home.

There are also other things that we can do to keep our bodies healthy. What else should we do to stay healthy? Write it in the comments below.

What do they eat?

Staples Disposable Paper Plate, Coated, White, 23 cm (package 50 ...

During the Spring term we began learning about what different animals eat. We found out that animals that eat the same thing as other animals have a special name. Can you remember what they are?

A herbivore is an animal that only eats _________.

A carnivore is an animal that only eats _________.

An omnivore is an animal that eats ___________ and __________.

Could you make a meal for herbivore, carnivore or an omnivore? Draw a plate of food for them.

Can you match the animals to the correct group? Have a go playing this game here.

Tip: to start the game you will need to click on each coloured box first.

Make your own animal

create your own animal – hayley mason

Year 1, my favourite science topic this year has definitely been 'Animals'.

So today, I challenge you to.... create your own animal!!

Draw a picture of it and write a description.
OR use this website to make it (click here)

What would it be called? What would they look like? What would they eat? How would they behave?

Material search

In the Autumn Term we learnt about different materials.

Your job today is to go on a material hunt. Have a look around your home for objects that are made from these types of materials.

How many can you list? You might prefer to group them together and label them like the picture below.
