Phonics - ay

Today's phoneme (sound) of the day is...ay!
Listen and practice the sound here.

We can use the rhyme 'ay, may I play?' to help us remember it better.

These are words with the sound of the day. You can sound out each part of the word. Have a go at reading these words by yourself:

TIP: Say the special friend first (ay), then Fred talk (say each letter sound e.g p-l-ay), then the whole word (play).

  Here is a red word.
We cannot sound out these words. Instead we use letter names.
Have a go at saying the word 5 times out loud, and then writing it 5 times.
You can type it into the 'comments' section underneath if this is easier.

Other activities:

  • Can you find anything in your house with an 'ay' sound?
  • Ask your adult to tell you one of the words on this page, then have a go pinching the sound on your Fred fingers.
  • Can you sing a song with an 'ay' word?
  • Write the sound on paper, and the rhyme on the other side. Hide it behind your back just like we do in class. If you have siblings you can play this with them!
